Head On Collision In Frederick County Kills Hagerstown Man

State Police say it appears the deceased was under the influence of alcohol.

 

 

Jefferson, Md (KM) A Hagerstown man was killed in a head-on collision in Frederick County early Sunday morning..

State Police say a Hyundai Elantra operated by Robert Watkins, 45, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 340 near Horine Road when it struck a Nissan Rouge heading westbound. Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

A front seat passenger in Watkins’ car, Ann Howdyshell, 45, of Frederick, was transported to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.. The operator of the Rouge identified as Eric Berryman, 45, of Strasburg, Virginia,  was also taken to Meritus.

The westbound lanes of Route 340 near Horine Road were closed for several hours while an investigation was conducted into the crash.

Troopers say it appears Watkins may have been under the influence of alcohol. They also say Watkins and Berryman were driving with revoked licenses.

State Police say they  received a call at the Frederick Barrack at 3:36 AM about a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 340 near Lander Road. Troopers responding to that area at first only found debris from a crash. However, after continuing their search, two vehicles  were located on Route 340 east of Horine Road.
