Health Dept. Urges Public To Stay Away From The Monocacy River

It says the river could be contaminated following the recent rains & sewage overflow.

Frederick, Md (KM) The Frederick County Health Department is urging the public to avoid the Monocacy River south of confluence with Carroll Creek for a week.

Following the overflow at the Frederick city Sewage Wastewater Treatment Plant, the agency says the floodwaters may contain unknown contaminants , even if they recede and the weather improves.

Swimming , wading and full body immersion should be avoided.. Boating is also discouraged because of high water levels, high velocity waters and downed trees can create drowning hazards. Anyone who comes in contact with the water from the affected waterway should wash thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating.

But the Department says fish from the Monocacy River should be safe to eat if it’s cleaned, scaled and cooked.
