Mayor O’Connor to Seek Public Input for New Police Chief

He said the public could be included in the process.

Frederick, MD – Following the recent announcement of Frederick Police Chief Ed Hargis’ retirement, Frederick’s mayor must now begin preparation to hire a new police chief.

Mayor Michael O’Connor was a recent guest on the Morning News Express with Bob Miller and said the exact method of hiring for the position is still being discussed.

“We’re already having conversations about is how do we bring the public into the process of finding a new police chief,” he said.

The city will conduct a nationwide search for a candidate but would also consider internal applicants.

O’Connor said various groups including the Neighborhood Advisory Council and the downtown business community might be brought in on a panel during the search process

“The challenge in bringing in a public component is doing so in a way where all the residents fell like got a voice in the room” O’Connor said. “Even if they’re not the one that’s there.”

Chief Hargis’ last day on the job will be Friday, February 21 and Captain Patrick Grossman will serve as acting chief while the city conducts their search.
