The National Museum of Civil War Medicine has the following upcoming events:

v     “Bringing the Story of War to Our Doorsteps:  Rediscovering Alexander Gardner’s Antietam Photographs” will be displayed at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine from December 14th thru February 28th.  For the first time since the Civil War, Mathew Brady’s famous 1862 photographic exhibition “The Dead of Antietam” will be reproduced.

v     The Pry House Field Hospital Museum will remain open all winter long with special hours.  Weekends through the end of May, Saturday and Sunday from 11am till 4pm.  A donation of $3 per person is suggested.

v     Saturday, February 9th the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will hold a talk on The Evolution of Military Medicine:  The Letterman Plan 1862 to 2012 by Greg Susla.  It will be held from 2pm till 3pm in the Delaplaine-Randall Room.  The program is free and included in the Museum admission fee.

v     The Pry House Field Hospital Museum will hold Marching to the Beat, that will feature different musicians from around the region to serenade visitors in the exhibit gallery with songs and instrumentals from the 1860s.

  • Saturday, February 9th – Evergreen Shade, a musical duo from central Virginia.
  • Saturday, February 16th – Mr. George Wunderlich, Executive Director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and world-renowned scholar and maker of early banjos, will entertain on his favorite instrument.
  • Saturday, February 23rd – Mr. Wes Merchant of Frederick, Md will play from his impressive repertoire of popular and traditional selections on the fiddle.

The Frederick County Humane Society is offering the following activities:

v     Right now their emergency pet food bank is extremely low on supplies.  For the next two months you may drop off pet food and supplies at Copy Doc Business Solutions.  They are located at 436 West Patrick Street and their business hours are Monday thru Friday from 7am till 6pm.

The Frederick County Humane Society is the county’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and their families.  They are located at 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick.

 

 

To show appreciation for those who serve in the U.S. Military, the National Park Service will begin issuing an annual pass offering free entrance to all 397 national parks for active duty military members and their dependents.

Attention Veterans.  The Korean War Veterans Organization is a federally chartered organization.  Membership is open to Veterans who served in the Armed Forces from June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 and Veterans who served a tour of duty in Korea from 1945 to the present.  The William E. Saturday, February 9th

All-County Middle School Music Festival will be held at 7pm in the Governor Thomas Johnson High School auditorium.  This event will feature the top 184 Frederick County public middle school music students.  This is the result of a rigorous audition process held last November.  This includes orchestra, band, and chorus performances.  Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for school-age children, with a $10 family maximum when families arrive together.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Center in Thurmont will hold their Cash Bash from 3pm till 8pm.  There is a winner every drawing and you can even win more than once.  Doors open at 2pm and tickets are $25, which includes food and refreshments.  There will also be music and entertainment, only one person admitted per ticket.

 

 

Sunday, February 10th

The University System of Maryland will hold a Longaberger Basket, Vera Bradley and Money Bingo at the Hagerstown Elks Lodge.  All funds raised at the event will benefit the USMH Scholarship Fund.  Doors open at 11am with lunch at noon.  Bingo will be from 1pm till 5pm.  Advance tickets are $25 and include lunch.  Tickets will be $30 at the door.  Everyone must have a paid ticket to enter.  Anyone can play bingo, but you must be 18 years or older to play tip jars.  For more information please call Gaye McGovern at 301.790.1462

Tuesday, February 12th

Buckeystown United Methodist Mens Group will hold their annual shrove Tuesday pancake dinner.  They are located at 3440 Buckeystown Pike and the event will be from 5pm till 7pm.  The menu will include pancakes, biscuits, sausage gravy, sausage, bacon, eggs, etc.  And the cost is a love donation to be used for various church projects.

 

Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church is holding a soup and sandwich sale.  The soups are chicken corn, vegetable beef, and bean, and the cost is $5 a quart, $2.75 a pint.  The sandwiches are chicken salad for $2.75 and country ham for $3.50.  Orders must be placed by Tuesday the 12th, and pickup will be Friday the 15th from 11am till 6pm.  To order please call 301.271.3309
