The National Museum of Civil War Medicine has the following upcoming events:

v     The Pry House Field Hospital Museum will remain open all winter long with special hours.  Weekends through the end of May, Saturday and Sunday from 11am till 4pm.  A donation of $3 per person is suggested.

v     Thursday, March 21st – The Frederick County Civil War Roundtable Meeting will be held from 7:30pm till 8:30pm.  It will be in the Delaplaine-Randall Room of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.  Lectures are free and this discussion will be on The Gilmore and Mosby Train Robberies.

v     Registration is open for Fall 2013.  All are welcome and financial air is available.  You can also call to schedule a personal visit and receive school information.

v     March 18-22 is Penny Power Week.  You can help by donating your loose change (and dollars) to your favorite student or directly to the school.  Students collect all week and compete against the other classes to win their own ice cream party.  All proceeds go to the school’s technology program.

v     March 19th – Take a Tour Tuesday and Science Fair.  Tours will be held from 9am till 1pm and from 7pm till 8pm, and while you’re visiting don’t forget to check out the student science fair.

The Frederick County Humane Society is offering the following activities:

v     Right now their emergency pet food bank is extremely low on supplies.  For the next two months you may drop off pet food and supplies at Copy Doc Business Solutions.  They are located at 436 West Patrick Street and their business hours are Monday thru Friday from 7am till 6pm.

The Frederick County Humane Society is the county’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to helping pets and their families.  They are located at 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick.

PNC and the IRS are offering free tax services and fast access to refunds.  The services are being offered at the Bernard W. Brown Community Center, located at 629 North Market Street in Frederick.  IRS certified volunteers working with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will provide this service to people who generally earn less than $51,000 a year.  To set up an appointment please call 301.662.3691.  You need to bring with you your W-2 form from all employers, interest statements from banks, a copy of last year’s tax returns and other relevant information about income and expenses.

Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to participate in the Historical Society of Frederick County’s second annual Byerly-Rothwell Photography Contest.  The contest seeks to encourage individuals to discover local history through the camera’s lens.  Possible subjects include, but are not limited to, historic structures, historical objects, places of historical significance, important events, notable individuals, and traditional activities.  Cash prizes of up to $150 are awarded to the top three photos in four divisions:  Adult-Amateur, Adult-Professional, Student-Primary, and Student-Secondary.  A prize for best in show is also awarded to the top overall entry.  Photographs entered in the contest will be on display at the Museum of Frederick County History in late summer.  The contest is open to those who live or attend school in Frederick County.  Each contestant may enter up to three photographs.  Deadline for entries is July 31st 2013.  Complete contest guidelines are available at www.frederickhistory.org or by calling 301.663.1188

The Francis Scott Key Lions Club is conducting a book drive to benefit local Frederick elementary schools.  The student ages targeted are kindergarten to grade 5 (approximately ages 5 thru 11).  While the main focus is on collecting books, educational age-appropriate puzzles and games will be accepted, as will monetary donations to purchase age-appropriate magazine subscriptions for the school libraries.  Collections boxes are at the following locations:

The Thrift Shop of Seton Center in Emmitsburg is holding a $5 bag sale on Friday from 10am till 4pm, and on Saturday from 10am till 3pm.  Shoppers are given a grocery sized bag by the Seton Center and are allowed to fill it full of merchandise for $5.  Overflow bags will be charged $7.

 

 

Friday, March 15th thru Sunday, March 17th

The Clear Springs Lions Club proudly presents its 62nd Annual Minstrel/Variety Show.  This is a musical celebration that will be held in the Clear Spring High School Auditorium at 7:30pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 2pm on Sunday.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children and students, and pre-school children are free.  All persons attending must have a ticket.  On Friday the Band Boosters will hold their Spaghetti Dinner from 5pm till 7pm, on Saturday the Athletic Department will be serving a roast beef supper from 5:30pm till 7pm, and on Sunday the Athletic Department will hold a soup and sandwich sale starting at 11:30am.  Dinners are not included in the ticket price for the show and are paid separately.

Christ Reformed UCC Church in Middletown will host Frederick’s local musicians at 4pm to raise fund for four area non-profits.  Advocates for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, Heartly House and Hope Alive.  Representatives for each group will be present to provide information and to answer questions.  Light refreshments will also be available.  There is no charge for admission, but there will be multiple opportunities to offer a free will donation.
