Rutgers men's basketball coach Mike Rice can be heard yelling profanities and a gay slur, and is shown making physical contact with players, on a videotape the school and ESPN showed today (Tuesday).
The school decided to screen the video for reporters after hearing that ESPN would air it on Outside the Lines. The tape -- and specifically the gay slur he used -- was why the school suspended Rice in December for three games and fined him $50,000. The tape came to light last year after the decision not to resign director of player development Eric Murdock. His lawyer told ESPN that Murdock was fired for reporting Rice's behavior and that his client will take legal action against the New Jersey university.
Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti says Rice will remain in his job as long as no further incidents take place.
