Who knew there were so many varieties and flavors to choose from? Growing up on Lipton tea bags, it was a treat when I could convince Mom at the grocery store to pick-up a box of Constant Comment. Since having discovered the world of loose leaf tea, I don’t think I could willingly go back to prepackaged boxed tea bags. As my discovery began, I started to liken tea to wine... I quickly learned that no two teas are alike. Flavor profiles differ depending on which country, region within that country and even the estate within that region. For example, I think Chinese Black Teas are a bit earthier. Where Indian Black Teas are a bit smoother and have a touch of sweetness. Yet, Indian teas from the Assam Region tend to be much bolder than teas from the Nilgiri Region. So, I like to blend these two varieties!
Tea drinking has been common for many years. Some Chinese ascribe the discovery of Tea to the legendary emperor Shen Nung about the Biblical time of Moses. We, as Americans, have literally only scratched the surface in our discovery. Teas come from all over the globe, namely: China, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Korea, Japan, Uganda and even the United States with tea estates in South Carolina and Hawaii. Since each country, region and estate produce very different flavor profiles, it’s fun to learn which region produces a customer’s perfect go-to variety.
Prior to opening a tea shop, I’d purchased so many boxes of tea where the descriptions sounded delightful...only to be disappointed when getting it home. We’ve designed our store with samples of all of our teas for you to see, smell and touch on your own. You’ll have a good idea what it will taste like before you get it home! Or, you can grab a cup to go and know before you get there! Come Taste, Touch & Smell for yourself at Voila! in Frederick located at 10 North Market Street in Historic Downtown Frederick.
