The Frederick Faith Debate is an open and honest forum for our local faith community leaders to share and discuss their views of the truth.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “The clash of ideas is the sound of freedom”. In that spirit, we seriously wrestle with important ideas… and are free to disagree with one another.

The hope is that through our wrestling we will develop a better understanding of the truth about the most important issues that face us in this world.

About Troy Skinner

Troy is a lifelong Chicago sports fan, getting into the radio business initially in an effort to be closer to the teams he already followed so closely.

From intern to Program Director, part-timer to Sales Manager, Troy's career has run the gamut in a variety of cities including Chicago, Orlando, Syracuse, New York City, and Frederick.

In addition to a number of "behind the scenes" radio responsibilities, Troy has spent time behind the microphone in a variety of capacities: sports reporter, news anchor, disc jockey, commercial production, and talk show host.

Raised in a nominally Christian home, Troy recommitted himself to serving the object of his faith, Jesus Christ, as an adult. He and his family are members of Poolesville Baptist Church.

Not always sure of the answers, Troy loves asking questions in an attempt to get to the heart of a matter.  He views the radio show as both a public service and a personal education.

He is very proud of the diversity of guests and subjects so far featured on the show.  From Buddhist to Baha'i. Roman Catholic to Eastern Orthodox. Atheist to Agnostic. Mormon to Muslim. Unitarian to Jewish. Charismatic to Presbyterian. Esoteric New Age Psychology to Conservative Fundamentalism.

TO LIVE FOR GOD...

To live for anything else but God leads to breakdown and decay. When a fish leaves the water, which he was built for, he is not free, but dead.

Worshiping other things besides God leads to a loss of meaning. If we achieve these things, they cannot deliver satisfaction, because they were never meant to be 'gods.' They were never meant to replace God. Worshiping other things besides God also leads to self-image problems. We end up defining ourselves in terms of our achievement in these things. We must have them or all is lost; so they drive us to work too hard, or they fill us with terror if they are jeopardized.

Today's Uplifting Message

WHAT DOES ABIDING MEAN ANYWAY?

In Andrew Murray's book, Abide in Christ, he describes the idea of abiding in this way:

"He had destined you to something better than a short-lived blessedness, to be enjoyed only in times of special earnestness and prayer, and then to pass away, as you had to return to those duties in which far the greater part of life has to be spent. No, indeed; He had prepared for you an abiding dwelling with Himself, where your whole life and every moment of it might be spent, where the work of your daily life might be done, and where all the while you might be enjoying unbroken communion with Himself. You did well to come; you do better to abide."

How beautiful is that picture. A life of unbroken oneness with God.

How to describe that to my kids? ... The more intangible God becomes in their lives, the greater chance they have of falling away when they get older. So I was searching for a way to make this more tangible. Then ... I came across the story of Solomon building the temple for the Lord.

Solomon has the distinct honor of building the first temple in Jerusalem and followed his father David's specifications as given to him by God. The story begins in 2 Chronicles 5:1, "So all the work Solomon did for the Lord's temple was completed." And remember that we are now the God's temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?"

So taking those two verses, we focused on the idea of the work that Solomon did to build the temple and how we can do work to build our temple for the Lord. Not that our temple is not "built," but we can do improvements to our temples.

When we work to the best of our abilities, we are doing improvements to God's temple. When we attempt to walk in the fruit of the Spirit, we are doing improvements to God's temple. When we pray throughout the day, we are acknowledging that we are God's temple.

And when Solomon had finished the temple, do you know what happened? God was there. 2 Chronicles 7:16 says, "And I have now chosen and consecrated this temple, so that My name may be there forever; My eyes and My heart will be there at all times."

While we work on our temple and our ability to be aware of God's presence in our lives, we are working toward our completeness which ends with eternal life with Him. If I can make my kids understand that by engaging the spiritual disciplines in their lives and also by walking in the fruit of the Spirit, looking for God in moments and situations, and listening for that still small voice in their ear that is based in scripture, then they will be on their way to abiding.

Today's Uplifting Message

ASK BIG

Imagine your child watching you cook breakfast and he keeps asking you if you are going to allow him to eat. How would that make you feel? Would you think that your child believes in the love that you have for him?

I think that God feels the same way when we have a lack of faith in His love and provision for us. God cares about every detail of our life. God does not turn a blind eye or a deaf eye to our petitions. He is there and more than willing to answer our petitions when we ask in FAITH!

How does one ask in faith? We find a scripture that covers the need we have and then we ask God to help us according to that promise. God is willing, able, and wanting to complete His word in our lives. Then the battle begins in our mind. We ask in faith and then the devil fills our mind with all kinds of doubts and fears that beat up against us taking our mind off the promise.

Let's say you have your vision of what you would like to do. But you don't have the money nor do you know anyone who can lend you the money. In Psalms 20: 4; "He (God) will give you your heart's desire and carry out all your plans."

What's the catch? We need to seek to do God's will first in our lives and He will add everything else. That does not mean we have to be perfect in our actions, just in our heart. In other words our motives must be sincere and pure. God wants us to succeed. He wants us to prosper. Why? So we can show others how great our God is and so we can bless others with that what we have received from Him.

Go ahead, dream big and ask God to bless that which you desire to do to further His Kingdom on earth.

Today's Uplifting Message

CHOOSE PEACE TODAY

"The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest" (Exodus 14:14 AMP).

In life, we're always going to have critics. We'll always have difficult people who try to upset us and steal our peace and joy. But, you don't have to respond to every critic. You can decide to take the high road and let God fight your battles for you.

Sometimes, no matter what you say or do, there are people who aren't going to accept you. They just don't want to be at peace with you. In fact, when Jesus sent out His disciples to certain homes, He told them to always speak peace over those homes. And then He said, in effect, "If they don't receive the peace that you're offering, then it will come back to you."

That tells me, if you will do your best to be at peace with people, even if they won't take your peace, the good news is that peace will just come back to you. You'll not only get your peace, but you'll get their share as well! That's double for your trouble! When you do the right thing no matter what is happening, God sees it and rewards it. So choose peace today and walk in the blessing He has for you!
