A Rockville man died following a plane crash at Carroll County Regional Airport in Westminster Friday morning. State Police say Henry Judkins, 64, was pronounced dead at R. Adams Cowley Shock Rrauma in Baltimore, where he was flown after the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

When he was a mile away from the airport, according to a State Police news release, Judkins radioed that he was having mechanical problems. Witnesses say the plane, a Remos GX, a Light Sports Aircraft, was flying at varying altitudes before it crashed in a grassy area about 40-feet from the runway.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and peformed life-saving measures on Judkins, according to authorities. A State Police Helicopter, Trooper 3, was dispatched. But when it landed, the pilot recognized an engine malfunction, and the chopper was grounded. Another State Police helicopter, Trooper 1, was called in to take Judkins to Shock Trauma. It landed at the Mitchell Golf Course in Reisterstown, where it was met by EMT's, who placed Judkins on board.

Maryland State Police Crime Scene technicians assisted investigators by processing the crash site, and attempting to recover physical evidence.
