Halloween is almost here and soon we'll see witches, princesses and zombies walking house to house trick-or-treating.

Costumes this year are becoming more extreme and Deputy State Fire Marshal Bruce Bouch said parents need to keep these costume tips in mind to keep kids safe.

"When you're getting them dressed up, make sure you pick costumes that are bright and reflective. When you're walking along an edge of a road, [make sure] drivers will be able to see them ahead of time and react accordingly," Bouch said.

He said kids should be easily seen.

You also want to make sure their costumers are short enough so they aren't tripping and their masks aren't blocking their vision. If they are darker type items, use some reflective tape on the costumers and on the trick-or-treat bags," Bouch said.

He said to provide children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry. When walking around with pets, reflective tape should be used on the leash so they can be seen. Also, Kids should be instructed to stay away from open flames or other heat sources and know how to stop, drop and roll in case of a fire. They should always be supervised when going trick-or-treating.

He suggests planning ahead can help make this Halloween a safe one.
