Two men were rescued from the Monocacy River near Devilbiss Bridge Road Tuesday afternoon.

Walkersville Rescue Company Chief Topper Cramer says personnel were dispatched at around 2:19 PM for two men in the River. He says one was in the water and the other was clinging to a tree. He says the rescue crew "deployed two boats, and we subsequently were able to take the individual that was in the water and get him to the shoreline with the assistance of the Sheriff's Office, and extricate them up the bank to an ambulance," he says.

Chief Cramer says the man in the water was rescued first. Then personnel worked on the man in the tree. "He was able to be extricated with Boat Two from Junior Fire Company, once they were able to get him," he says. "We got the first victim out because he was in the most danger. We were able to secure the second victim in a boat, and he was taken out in the boat."

The whole operation took about a half hour, says Chief Cramer.

Both men were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. Cramer thinks they may have been suffering from hypothermia. "I'm sure they had exposure to cold because the water was very cold, the temperature was cold," he says. "They had been in there probably ten or 15-minutes before someone saw them and made the call. They could have been in the water up to an hour before they got 'em out."

The Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police helped rescue personnel get the two men out of the water, says Cramer.
