The push to repeal Maryland's death penalty continues with a rally that took place Monday in Annapolis.

Delegate Michael Hough is one of several local lawmakers who believe the law is needed.

"I certainly have a lot of respect for people on both sides of the issue but in the end it is keeping our society safe and there's certain people, that we unfortunately are unable to incarcerate safely," Hough said.

There are currently five people on death row in the state.

"We don't have life without parole in Maryland, that's not true. They keep saying that you can get life without parole and that's not true. The Maryland Court of Appeals said after 25 years, everyone is eligible for parole. Now, granted, the governor would have to grant it to you but you are still eligible for parole after 25 years," Hough said.

Hagerstown resident Marty Price spoke during Monday's rally. His father was convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Price's stepmother and stepsister in 1988.

The event is organized by Maryland Citizens Against State Executions.
