The search is on for the other two individuals.

One of the suspects in the armed robbery of Colonial Jewelers in downtown Frederick has been caught. Police say Alonzo Meadows of Fairfax, Va. was apprehended in Washington DC early Wednesday morning. He's being held by authorities in the District on a fugitive warrant.

On Tuesday afternoon, Frederick Police Lt. Clark Pennington says a citizen flagged down a police cruiser at Court and Patrick Streets to report that he saw three men with masks and one with a gun enter the Colonial Jewelers at 1 South Market Street. A detective saw the three leave the store and ran after them. They got into a vehicle and drove off. But the detective managed to get a license plate number and report it to patrol officers.

"It was based on the information we received from the citizens, and the community, and also the tag number, which lead us to the suspect down in Washington DC," says Lt. Pennington.

He says Meadows is being held until he can be returned to face charges in Frederick. He could waive his right to extradition and be transported very quickly to Frederick to face charges, or he could fight extradition.

During the arrest on Wednesday, a black pickup truck was recovered by the Metropolitan Police Department. "With the stop of the pickup truck with the suspect inside, we were able to obtain the pickup truck from MPD, obtain a search warrant, and transport it back here to Frederick to be processed," he says.

Police are still continuing their search for the other two suspects in this robbery. "There is still a lot of work to be done in the case. There are two outstanding suspects. We have not given up looking for them. We are actually continually gathering additional information and additional evidence that we're hoping will lead us to these other two suspect," Lt. Pennington says.

Anyone who has information that could help in the investigation can call the lead investigator, Detective Morgan, at 301-600-1259, or the tip line at 301-600-TIPS {8477}. Citizens can remain anonymous when calling the tip line.

This robbery is very similar to one at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, where suspects entered the Zales Jewelers on Monday, smashed glass display cases, and stole jewelry. Lt. Pennington says Frederick Police are comparing notes with authorities in Arlington County, Va. He says Frederick Police investigators have seen the video from Pentagon City, and Arlington County authorities have viewed the video from Colonial Jewelers. "There is some similarities and there are some differences. And we have to look at those objectively and come to a determination as to whether or not it's the same suspect," he says.

On Tuesday at Colonial Jewelers, the suspects ordered all employees and customers to lie on the floor. They smashed a pane of glass in a display case containing expensive watches. After taking the watches, they sprayed a liquid substance in the air, believed to be pepper spray. 10 people had to be treated for the affects of this spray.

Chief Thomas Ledwell is thanking his officers, detectives, civilian employees, citizens and employees of Colonial Jewelers for their help in this case. "This type of crime inevitably cause fear and shock not only to the victims, but also to the surrounding community," Chief Ledwell says in a statement. "Despite this, both the victims and the surrounding community pulled together, and helped the FPD to quickly establish crucial leads. We are very appreciative."
