A Westminster man accused of killing his former roommate last month was indicted for first-degree murder last week and now faces nine criminal charges.

A Carroll County grand jury indicted David Michael Montgomery, 28, Jan. 31 for the fatal stabbing of Edward Zepp, 61, also of Westminster.

Montgomery is charged with felony first-degree murder, first-degree murder, robbery charges, first-degree burglary and other related charges. A felony first-degree murder is charged because the alleged murder was committed during another felony, in this case, the robbery.

Police found Zepp at his home in the 100 block of East Main Street in Westminster Jan. 5 with a laceration to his throat. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to police reports, witnesses heard noises consistent with a struggle around 4 a.m. on the morning of the incident and called police. When they arrived, they found Zepp lying on the back porch of the home with a heavy loss of blood.

Montgomery and Zepp were former roommates at the home where Zepp was found. The two lived together at the home for about a year in 2011, though were no longer living together at the time of the incident, according to police.

Zepp was the only resident of the apartment located downstairs in the two-story home.

Montgomery was arrested hours after stabbing in Anne Arundel County, where police spotted him driving Zepp’s 2007 Hyundai van, which had been reported missing. He was originally charged with first- and second-degree murder.

Police in Anne Arundel County received calls that the van was operating erratically in a convenience store parking lot.

Montgomery is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center without bail. He is represented by defense attorney Alex Cruickshank, of the Carroll County Public Defender’s Office.

The case will be prosecuted by the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office.
