Some local programs that would be affected are special education, section 8 housing, emergency food assistance, the home investment partnership, the historical preservation fund, and the crime victims fund.

Frederick County Government and the Board of Education will feel the pain of budget cuts if sequestration goes into effect this Friday.

"Frederick County Government and Frederick County Public Schools both have several programs that will be impacted by sequestration. The impact, [for] Frederick County should this take place, is about $3 million," Commissioner’s President Blaine Young said.

Some local programs that would be affected are special education, section 8 housing, emergency food assistance, the home investment partnership, the historical preservation fund, and the crime victims fund.

"The problem is there are a lot of scare tactics but not a lot of specifics. People want information. People want to be able to know what is exactly going to happen and we are getting more scare tactics than we are specifics," Young said.

Ft Detrick, one of the county largest employers, is also closely watching what Congress does this week. The local army installation employs nearly 5-thousand people.

The Frederick Airport will also be hard hit by the sequester. It would be one of five regional airports in Maryland that will close it's towers on April 1st if an agreement is not reached by Congress. The Frederick Airport is the second busiest airport in the state.
