Local officials are gearing up for this weekend's 2013 Frederick Running Festival. "Sunday's event will start off honoring the victims and heroes of this year's Boston Marathon. The race will begin with the iconic song that's played during the 7th inning of every Boston Red Sox Games, Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline', which is a Boston tradition," said Lee Corrigan, president of Corrigan Sports Enterprises. Boston strong stickers will appear on the start and finish arches.
The festival, taking place at the Frederick Fairgrounds, will kick off on Saturday with a 'kids fun start' at 5 p.m. A Twilight 5K beginning at 6:00 p.m. Sunday's half marathon and 2 person team relay will start at 7:00 a.m.
More than six thousand runners will participate. "We have four countries being represented. England, Thailand, Canada and France," said Corrigan.
Meanwhile, Frederick Police say in light of the tragedy that occurred at this year's Boston Marathon, the agency is well prepared to handle the crowd. "We've always been prepared for this event. It's the 11th year. The Frederick Police Department has a good relationship with Corrigan, and through our efforts of working with the race director, we've already had security plans in place for years past," said Sgt. Jason Keckler. "We want citizens and participants to be our eyes and ears. If you see anything suspicious, please call 911," continued Sgt. Keckler.
