School officials say the disagreement with the public school system has been resolved.
The Frederick Classical Charter School can resume hiring teachers for the fall, now that a disagreement with the County School System has been resolved.
A few weeks ago, the School System told the Charter School it has to consider candidates from its "to be placed list." Those are teachers who are either coming back from leave, or had been laid off due to enrollment declines. But that problem has been overcome, according to Tom Neumark, President of the Board of Trustees for the Frederick Classical Charter School. "We have been able to start moving with making offers from the candidates we had selected before," he says. "We weren't being allowed to move forward because the school system had a 'to be placed' list. So they had previously notified the candidates, our previously preferred candidates, that they couldn't make offers, and now we can make offers."
Neumark says the school had interviewed nine candidates for teaching positions, and offers were made to three candidates when the school system intervened. Now the process of making offers can continue. "I think this is going to be the last major hurdle--we'll some other smaller ones, I'm sure--but the major hurdle before the opening of the school is getting the teachers hired. We're on track to do that now, and we're excited to move forward," he says.
The Frederick Classical Charter School is scheduled to open on August 19th, like the rest of the local public school system. "We'll be the largest charter school in Frederick County. It will be 280 students the first year," Neumark says. It will have students from K trough 6th grades, with 7th and 8th grades added on in future years.
Neumark says the curriculum in the Frederick Classical Charter School will consist of tracks called grammar, logic and rhetoric.
The school will be located at 8445 Spires Way, which is in the Riverside Research Park, not too far from the Wegman's Supermarket.
The other charter school in Frederick is the Monocacy Valley Montessori Public Charter School which opened in 2004. It's located at 217 Dill Avenue.
