Maryland State Orphan's Court Judge and former Frederick County Commissioner Mike Cady has died after a battle with cancer.
According to his on-line resume, Michael L. Cady is a man who overcame many obstacles to be qualified to serve as Judge for the Orphan’s Court. Born blind, he attended Braille school through the sixth grade. As a result of daily eye exercises, a high protein and carotene diet, and the quality care of physicians at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, his sight improved in one eye to the extent he could attend regular school in the 7th grade. Following graduation from high school, he entered the Divine Savior Seminary, but decided that he was not cut out to be a priest. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and received an Honorable Discharge. At age 25, he married. His wife Denise died when their children were 7, 5 and 3. He raised his children while working and going to college. In 1990, after his children finished college, Mike married Darlene, who is a high school teacher.
Mike began his career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capitol Area as a Claims Examiner. Over a ten-year period, he was promoted to various positions, including Medicare Supervisor, Director of Dental Relations, and Liaison between the Social Security Administration and the National Blue Cross and Blue Shield Associations. Subsequently, he served as Director of the Finance Office of George Washington University Medical Center, the Executive Director of the D.C. Dental Society, Executive Director of the Maryland State Dental Association and Internet Manager for Frederick Nissan.
Cady was elected to be a County Commissioner in 2002 and served until 2006. He was next elected as an Orphans Court Judge in 2010.
Frederick County Commissioner's President Blaine Young said Cady's vision for the region helped the county to grow and prosper. "He was very active in the community. He was very instrumental in redefining that area of Urbana over to Linganore with the appropriate zoning and that is where we have realized that many people who have come here want to live."
Young said all Frederick County flags are to flown at half staff for the next 48-hours in honor of Cady's memory.
