Frederick County's collections have also jumped from $7.3 million collected last year at this time to $7.8 million.

Maryland's Department of Human Resources is going after dead beat parents who can afford to pay their child support but don't as part of their "tough but fair" approach to help make them a National leader in child support collections.

Spokesman Pat Hines said the collection payments are up more in this federal fiscal year compared to last year.

"We're about 6 months into the federal fiscal year at the department and what we're seeing is that child support collections are up $11.8 million over the same period last year," Hines said.

The agency works with parents who want to pay their child support but can't afford it because of a job loss, injury or other reason.

"Rather than follow up with them, maybe we need to reach out with an open hand and what can we do to help you get back on your feet so you can get back to providing for your children," Hines said.
