The money will be used to promote safe driving among teenagers.

A $1000 grant has been awarded to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office to work with Walkersville High on promoting safe driving and youth safety. The grant comes from the Allstate Foundation which supports "SAVE," Students Against Violence Everywhere.

The program focuses on teen safe driving awareness campaigns, especially during back-to-school, holidays, proms and graduations. It does that through positive peer influencing.

Throughout the month of May, activities at Walkersville High will focus on school announcements referencing safe driving facts. Teen protection information will also be handed out during lunch by the junior class. In addition, there will be unannounced seatbelt and provisional driver's license checks, cell-phone usage checks, a teen and alcohol awareness presentation and narcotics canine scans.

Walkersville Highs' School Resource Officer, Dfc Teresa Holland, applied for the grant, and is overseeing these activities.
