Maryland State Police successfully arrested a Carroll County man wanted on a warrant Thursday evening after he refused to come out of a house where he lives with his grandmother when troopers arrived there earlier Thursday to serve the arrest warrant.

The man is identified as Robert L. Mellema, 31, of the 1400-block of Marble Quarry Road, Union Bridge, Md. Mellema is wanted on a warrant for a violation of probation. He is also wanted for questioning by police in Littlestown, Pa.

At about 11:00 a.m., troopers from the Westminster Barrack and a State Police warrant task force went to the residence to serve the warrant on Mellema. Troopers saw Mellema go into the house when they arrived, but he refused to come out. Mellema’s grandmother was also in the home and was known to have medical conditions.

Troopers established a perimeter and called for the State Police Hostage Recovery Team negotiators and the Special Tactical Assault Team Element. Negotiators attempted to talk with Mellema throughout the day and resolve the situation peacefully. Mellema was known to have previously had access to firearms.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m., members of the State Police Special Tactical Assault Team Element entered the home. Mellema was arrested without incident. His grandmother was found to be in good condition.

No shots were fired during the standoff. No one was injured.
