The price to see a doctor or dentist while being housed at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center may be going up.

Local lawmakers will be hearing a bill today in Annapolis to increase the fee to see a doctor from $4 to $8 and it would cost $35 to see a dentist.

Delegate Kelly Schultz said House Bill 500 is one of 1,400 bills being heard in committee right now.

"I think when lawmakers sit down and take a legitimate look at the expenses that are paid out on behalf of those have been convicted of crime through our court process that they'll look at the added expense within the crime and they'll say there is a legitimate reason why we need to increase these fees," Schultz said.

She said the bill would help save taxpayers money.

"We hear all the time about fees not having been increased and taxes having been increased over so many years and a certain amount of time and looking for tax payers and rate payers of energy bills to chip in a little bit more so it is not unreasonable to ask those that are receiving services within the court defense systems to also have to pay an increase in some of their fees," Schultz said.

The fees would be paid for out of the inmates spending accounts.

A few weeks ago, lawmakers voted against an increase in processing fees and GED classes for local inmates.
