None have been reported here so far, but they have been occurring in other counties.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office is getting the word out about home improvement scams. There have been no complaints so far this year in the county, but there have been some in neighboring jurisdictions.
Authorities urge citizens to be cautious of anyone coming to their home, and offering to seal their driveway, repair their chimney, do roofing work or clean out their ducts. Reputable contractors will be able to provide a company name, address, phone number, a Maryland Home Improvement Commission license and references. Deputies say be wary of those whose business names can't be verified, or their licenses are outdated; or they have no license. In addition, the scammer will want to be paid in cash rather than a check, and wants to be paid in advance.
If you encounter someone like this, you're asked to contact the Sheriff's Office, or your local police. Authorities say don't delay; the quicker law enforcement can respond to these types of complaints, the sooner these individuals are apprehended.
