Parkway Elementary School is taking learning outside the classroom.
Parents, staff and community members are working as the school yard habitat team to help students create a Sensory Garden. Heather Putman, the reading specialist, said it will use several learning styles to help all students learn. The garden also includes special touch and sight sections.
"It is a garden of native plants to Maryland where plants, trees and shrubs plan to go into a large space. We organized it by our five senses so we can incorporate multiple learning styles for all students," Putman said.
Each classroom will plants and maintain a specific area of the garden. Once the planting is complete, students will have the opportunity to experience outdoor lessons in different parts of the garden.
