A woman is dead and three others critically injured in an apartment fire Wednesday afternoon in Washington County.

Hagerstown City spokeswoman Erin Wolfe said the blaze broke out in a three-story house and heavy smoke could be seen thru-out the downtown area.

"Our fire-fighters were dispatched around 12:39 p.m. for a house fire, on Summit Avenue; it was an apartment fire. When officials first arrived on the scene, there was heavy black smoke coming from the top of the building and there looked like there was flames from the third floor porch as well," Wolfe said.

Wolfe added a 3-year-old girl was suffering from smoke inhalation and a man in his 40's was burned severly. A 65-year-old man was suffering from burn injuries to his back. All three were all taken to Meritus medical Center and were expected to be flown out for further treatment.

Officials say a woman's body was recovered inside of the third floor apartment where she lived. The victims are all family members; a husband and wife, their daughter and the woman's father.

One fire-fighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Fire officials say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
