An Urbana High social studies teacher has been named Frederick County's Teacher of the Year for 2012 and 2013. Norman Crosby has been at Urbana High since it opened in 1995.   Prior to that, he taught at Frederick High.

Crosby and the winners from the 23 other school districts in the state will be honored with a gala at Martin's West in Baltimore on October 5th. One will be selected that evening as Maryland's Teacher of the Year, and be eligible to compete for the National Teacher of the Year award.

Crosby earned his B.S. in History from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and his Master's Equivalency in History from Northeastern University.  He's a member Phi Alpha Theta, a professional society dedicated to the promotion of the study of history.

Crosby was runner up for FCPS Teacher of the Year in 2003-2004, and nominated for the Institute of American History's National History Teacher of the Year Award for 2011-2012, and Disney's National Teacher of the Year Award in 2000.

The letters of recommendation describe Crosby as passionate, inspiring, intelligent, a master teacher, and high valued member of Urbana High's community of educators.

Urbana High Chemistry Teacher Michele Shearer was named National Teacher of the Year for 2011.
