Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal accident that happened around 5:00 p.m. Friday on Route 491.

Officials say 22-year-old Jon Gauss, Jr. from Cascade, Md., was driving north on Route 491 in a Honda Civic when his vehicle crossed over the center lane, for unknown reasons, and struck a Federal Express tractor trailer head on. The collision caused him to be ejected from the vehicle. Gauss was pronounced dead at the scene.

 The driver of the tractor trailer, 50-year-old James Frey, from Boonsboro, Md., was not injured.
