It is a small green insect that lives under the bark of trees. So far, it has killed tens of millions of ash trees in 15 different states around the United States.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is warning residents of a small insect that could be targeting your trees and fire wood.
Spokesperson with the U.S.D.A. Sharon Lucik said it is called the emerald ash borer and it is a small green insect that lives under the bark of trees. So far, it has killed tens of millions of ash trees in 15 different states around the United States.
"Don't transport firewood because we know that firewood is probably the biggest vehicle that is spreading the pest. When people go camping, when they go recreating, they go across country on a family vacation, if they are taking firewood with them, chances are they are spreading the pest as well," Lucik said.
Lucik said if you are planning on going camping, do not bring your own firewood and suggests buying it at the camp site.
The beetle was first found in Michigan in 2002 then discovered in Maryland in 2003.
