He gets 9 years in prison.
A Hagerstown man convicted of the stabbing of another man was sentenced on Wednesday. In Frederick County Circuit Court, Avarice Brown was given nine years behind bars.
"That's the top of the Maryland state sentencing guidelines. However, we were asking for 15 years, we felt, because of the stabbing. Because of the serious nature of the offense, we wanted him to serve over that," says State's Attorney Charlie Smith. "So we were a little bit disappointed but understand the judge's sentencing because that was at the top of the guidelines and he had no criminal history."
Holman was convicted in March, 2012 of attempted 2nd-degree murder, 1st-degree assault, and 2nd-degree assault.
The stabbing occurred in the early morning hours of September 25th, 2011 in the Pastimes Cafe parking lot on Buckeystown Pike. The victim, Duntel Watts of Frederick, was in a car with Holman's estranged wife, Janeen Holman of Hagerstown. When Watts got out of the car, Holman started stabbing him repeatedly, according to Smith. Holman began chasing Watts and stabbing him in the back. "This person {Watts} received eight stab wounds to his upper body, had be flown to the Shock Trauma Center down in Baltimore, and hospitalized for five days," says Smith.
Janeen Holman was also injured, but she was treated and released at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
"He was a friend of Holman's estranged wife. There were no allegations that they were having any sort of an affair or anything like that," Smith says. "I just think that being there was the wrong thing for Mr. Watts that evening."
