Witness says defendant admitted he killed 'the mother of his baby.'
The prosecution rested its case Tuesday in the trial of Melvin "Rock" Smith. He’s charged with 1st-degree murder and other offenses for the shooting death of Tranice Richardson in July of 2011. The homicide took place outside of Richardson’s apartment on Orchard Terrace. Court records say Melvin Smith fathered at least one of Richardson’s children.
State’s Attorney Charlie Smith says a number of witnesses testified in court on Tuesday before the prosecution wrapped up its case. "The most compelling testimony came from a former girlfriend of his who he fled to after the incident," he says. "And she testified that he admitted to her that he killed the mother of his baby."
State’s Attorney Charlie Smith and defendant Melvin Smith are not related.
This could be a strong piece of evidence for the state, says Charlie Smith. "We’re fairly certain in our case, but it’s up to the jury. They’re fair and impartial, and it’s up to them about what evidence is important to them, and what evidence is not," he says.
Charlie Smith says the defense will present its case, and depending upon how many witnesses are called, closing arguments could take place on Wednesday, and the jury would soon begin deliberating after that.
