Park Rangers at Monocacy National Battlefield are looking for information regarding several holes dug along the Rt. 355 and Monocacy River section of the battlefield, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

Authorities said the holes were discovered on May 28th while Rangers were patrolling a section of the park that is popular to fisherman and swimmers. Investigators believe artifacts were removed from the holes that were dug.

The Archeological Resource Protection Act prohibits anyone from excavating, removing, damaging or altering archeological resources on federal land. Those found guilty of violating, or attempting to violate, the Archeological Resource Protection Act could face a jail sentence of up to one year and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Rangers are asking for assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible. A reward is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and successful conviction of the person or persons responsible.
