He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Maryland State Trooper assigned to the Hagerstown Barrack was struck on Thursday morning while conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 70.

Officials say Trooper D. Avila had stopped a vehicle near Cedar Ridge Road on the shoulder. As he was speaking with the driver, a 1993 Freightliner tractor  trailer drifted into the right shoulder. It struck the trooper’s cruiser, which had its emergency lights illuminated, and then hit Trooper Avila.

He was taken to Meritus Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

State police say the operator of the tractor trailer identified as William John Riegal, Jr., 70, of New Paris, Pa. was not hurt.  Riegel did stop following the incident.

He has been charged with failing to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle, and negligent driving.
