A big-box store is being considered for the Golden Mile.

Officials are looking into rezoning property at the Frederick Towne Mall.  "Currently the Frederick Towne Mall has a zoning of mixed use and that zoning designation does not allow for big box retailers," said Gabriel Dunn, Division Manager for the Frederick City Planning Department.  "The mall's owner is requesting the rezoning," continued Dunn.  If the zoning reverts to general commercial, the owner agrees to start work on some of the Golden Mile plan's other redevelopment goals, officials said.

"A big box is any store that has a gross floor area not less than 60,000 square feet."   The Golden Mile Alliance, a group of volunteers, have been working with the community to define their vision of the Golden Mile's Small Area Plan.  "They've been very proactive.  We've heard specific ideas of what people want, like a movie theatre," said Dunn.

The commission is set to vote on the Golden Mile's plan in August and will have a hearing on the city's comprehensive rezoning issue Monday.
