The Frederick Police Department received several complaints regarding "spray chalk" graffiti over the Fourth of July holiday and is reminding residents of the city's graffiti ordinance, according to a news release from the Frederick Police Department.

Graffiti advertising a local beer festival was found on sidewalks in the downtown area. The recent rains did not wash it away, and crews with the Department of Public Works are removing it, according to the news release.

The Frederick Police Department is working with the Department of Public Works to determine the costs to remove it and will request reimbursement from those responsible for the graffiti, police said.

According to Frederick City Code 15-43, graffiti includes writings, drawings, and inscriptions in paint, ink, chalk or dye on public or private structures or property.

The penalty is a fine of $250 for the first violation, and $500 for any additional violations, according to the city code.
