A 28 year old Frederick man is under arrest after he led police on a chase Tuesday afternoon.

The incident unfolded around 3:15 p.m., when a Frederick County Sheriff's Deputy saw a Mercury Grand Marquis being driven erratically on North Market Street by Schifferstadt Boulevard.

The Mercury passed the deputy's cruiser and other vehicles while traveling on the shoulder at a high rate of speed. The deputy tried to catch the vehicle before it merged onto Route 26.

The Mercury continued onto northbound Route 15 where another deputy tried to stop it. The driver refused and continued passing other cars on the shoulder and weaving in and out of traffic.

A short time later, the Mercury rear-ended a black Hyundai Elantra. The Mercury rammed the Hyundai two more times in an effort to push it off the roadway. The driver of the Hyundai was not hurt.

The deputy once again tried to get the Mercury stopped but the driver refused. The suspect intentionally struck the deputy's cruiser twice before coming to a stop on Route 15 at Stull Road.

After a brief struggle, the man was taken into custody. He was transported to the hospital for an evaluation.

The deputy whose cruiser was hit, is a 20-year veteran of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. He was treated for minor injuries and released from Occupational Health Services.

The suspect is facing numerous charges including driving under the influence and assault.
