Charges are pending in connection with a fatal crash in Washington County Tuesday afternoon.

Maryland State Police say a Ford Edge operated by Brandon Martz, 20, of Hagerstown had merged on to the highway from State Line Road at the Pennsylvania border. Authorities say Martz was making unsafe lane changes when his vehicle struck a Cadillac SRX while traveling southbound along Interstate 81. The Cadillac operated by Stanley Stankiewicz, 83, of Crystal River, Florida went down an embankment and overturned several times.

Mr. Stankiewicz and his passenger, Clara Stankiewicz, 80, were taken to Meritus Medical center. Mrs. Stankiewciz died from her injuries.

Troopers say both were wearing seatbelts and drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in this crash.

Southbound I-81 was closed for about two hours while authorities conducted their investigation.

The Maryland State Police were assisted in their investigation by Pennsylvania State Police, and fire and rescue personnel from Washington County, Md. and Franklin County, Pa.
