The presidential campaigns are in full swing, and municipal elections in Frederick don't take place until next year, but already the race for mayor is starting to heat up. The Frederick Gazette reports that one person considering a run for the city's top job is Alderman Shelley Aloi. "I love serving, and I want to continue to serve where I have the most impact," Aloi tells WFMD News.

She also says she has been approached by citizens who have encouraged her to enter the race. Aloi says she will make that decision in the fall.

"We need to stop avoiding those things that are difficult to address," says Aloi. She says city officials need to take on problems with a sense of urgency. "In particular, that would be some OPEB and pension reform," she says. "As you've heard, we have 128-million unfunded liability in OPEB, and a $92-million unfunded pension." OPEB stands for Other Post Employmente Benefits.

The Gazette also reports that another alderman thinking about running for mayor is Karen Young.

The man who currently holds the job of mayor, Randy McClement, was recently asked if he plans to run for a second term. "Everyone seem to be asking me that," he says. "I'm still considering it."

During McClement's term, the city was able to negotiate a new lease with the Frederick Keys for the use of Harry Grove Stadium, and plans for a downtown hotel and conference center are moving forward.

But he's come under criticism from some of the aldermen for a lack of urgency in hammering out a new contract with Frederick Police Officers, and has been slow on issues such as blighted properties and pension reform.

For candidates planning to run for mayor and aldermen, the deadline to file is July 9th, 2013. Primary election day is September 10, 2013. The general election is scheduled for November 5th, 2013.
