During the tough economic times, many people are turning to comparison websites to find the best quotes for home, car or health insurance but these sites could be a scam and costing you thousand of dollars.
Jody Thomas, the Vice President of Communications with the Better Business Bureau said many of these sites only have e-mail address and does not provide a phone number or physical business address. As a result, victims cannot contact anyone with their concerns.
"The company withdrew unauthorized monthly payments from their bank accounts. The victims were, for the most part, unaware that they purchased or denied purchasing a policy and just said they simply submitted a request for quotes. So, all of the sudden, they were getting withdraws because they provided their personal banking information when they applied for quotes," Thomas said.
One particular site is United Drs Insurance who had withdrawn money from victims' account unauthorized. Many of those victims did not buy policy and only submitted a request for a quote. Money lost ranged from $40 to $9,000.
Thomas said if you are requesting a quote, there is no reason to provide your birthday, social security number or any personal banking information to these websites.
