Former Frederick County Sheriff, Jim Hagy, said the pair was taken into custody at the Interstate 70 rest-stop in Myersville on October 24, 2002 and then transported to Montgomery County and held at the Family Life Center. Frederick County Deputy, Ron Hibbard, was told to stand guard outside of the room Malvo was being kept with strict orders to not open the door and keep it locked. Hibbard heard a noise and ordered the room to be opened and when it was, he could only see feet hanging from the ceiling. Malvo was trying to escape and was stopped because of Hibbard's quick response.
During the 3-week shooting rampage Muhammad and Malvo killed 10 people and wounded 3 others
