Over 20,000 people in Frederick County have diabetes.
According to the American Diabetes Association of Maryland, every 17 seconds someone new is diagnosed with diabetes. Current estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by 2050. "Over 370,000 Marylanders have the disease, including over 20,000 people in Frederick County," said Kayla Twain, manager of social events. "Last year, the cost of diabetes to Frederick was over $500,000 million."
The ADA is committed to stopping diabetes in the Frederick community. "We are sponsoring the Frederick Step Out Walk, on Sunday, October 14th, 2012, in Baker Park. The event will feature live music, food and family entertainment. We want walkers to come out and spend the day with us. Registration will begin at noon and the three mile walk will start at 1:00 p.m.," continued Twain.
In addition to the Step Out Walk, the ADA will be holding its 2nd annual Healthy Frederick Week, September 23-29th. "This is a week long community based call to action aimed at increasing awareness and providing opportunities for citizens and businesses to make critical life changes," said Twain.
