The roadway has since reopened. The parcel contained a block of asphalt.
Buckeytown Pike (Route 85) near the FSK Mall was blocked off in both directions by State Police Friday afternoon after a suspicious package was found along the curb near the Valero Gas Station. But the CHART website says all lanes of that roadway have since reopened.
Earlier in the afternoon, Troopers set up a 1,000-foot perimeter near the package, and motorists were urged to avoid the area for the time being. Nearby businesses, such as Valero's and Sheetz, were evacuated.
It's unknown how long the package has been there or who left it.
State Fire Marshal's Office explosives technicians were called to the scene to examine the package. They used a controlled explosive technique which destroyed the parcel. State Police say the package contained a large, dense block of roadway asphalt.
During the incident, the Frederick County Emergency 911 Center reported a call believed to related to the incident and police response.
State Police are continuing their investigation.
