One of its sponsors is AARP.
Another forum for the 6th District Congressional Candidates is scheduled for Sunday at Frederick Community College. Once again, incumbent Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett will debate the issues with Democratic challenger John Delaney. It will take place at Kussmaul Theater between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The doors will open to the public at 12:00 noon.
Both candidates squared off during a forum at FCC on Monday night.
Two of the event’s sponsosrs are the Frederick and Gaithersburg chapters of the AARP. "Our focus since March is Social Security and Medicare and keeping it solvent," says Tammy Bresnahan, the Associate State Director of Advocacy for AARP.
She says many AARP members want to know how the candidates feel about the future of these two programs.
The organization polled its members in Maryland after a number of ideas were proposed on how to keep Social Security and Medicare from going under. "Vouchers for Medicare to cutting it to maybe reduce some of the benefits, along with Social Security, increasing the age. So we wanted to hear from our membership, and what they felt," Bresnahan said.
Anyone who attends the forum can write down questions which will be submitted to the candidates. Paper and pens will be provided, says Bresnahan.
Even though these issues concern older Americans, Bresnahan says young people should also attend the forum. "When you start talking about the 20-something or 30-something who are just starting out in their career, or in the middle of their career, everybody has a vested interest in what happens to Social Security," she says. "You’re 20-something and you haven’t put that much in. You blink your eye; today you’re 20, tomorrow you’re 55."
The forum is also sponsored by WFMD, the League of Women Voters of Frederick County, and Maryland Public Television. MPT’s Jeff Salking will moderate the forum.
