Hurricane Sandy is gone, and Frederick County highway crews have been left with a mess to clean up. Highway Operations personnel are dealing with flooded roads, and roads that are blocked by downed power lines and trees. Assistant Superintendent Donnie Crum says about 100 roads were closed early Tuesday morning as the storm was leaving the area, but now that number, as of 5:30 PM on Tuesday, is down to 47. "We had high water on a lot of roads, had a lot of tree damage, and we also had a lot of damage to utilities that coincided with the trees, and that really made a royal mess of things," he says.

Crum says crews had to wait for representatives from Potomac Edison and Verizon to take care of their lines before the trees and branches which came could be removed. But when it comes to flooded roads, the county has to wait for the waters to recede. "Give us a little time for the water to go down. That was large rain event, that was a hurricane, you know. We're making pretty good progress, you know," says Crum.

If you happen to come upon a flooded road, Crum says don't drive through it. He says it's better to "turn around, don't drown."
