Flood Warnings Extended For Potomac and Monocacy Rivers

A flood warning has been extended until this evening for the Monocacy River near Frederick.

A flood warning has been extended until this evening for the Monocacy River near Frederick.

At 2 a.m. Wednesday, the stage was 21.4 feet. Flood stage is 15.0 feet. Major flooding is occurring. Forecasters say the river's water level will fall below flood stage by mid-afternoon today.

This crest compares to a previous crest of 18.1 feet on December 27, 2009.

A flood warning has been extended until Thursday evening for the Potomac River at Point of Rocks.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday, the stage was 17.0 feet. Flood stage is 16.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.

Officials say the river will continue rising to near 21.1 feet by early this evening. The river will fall below flood stage mid-afternoon tomorrow.

At 22.0 feet, water begins to cover the C & O Canal Towpath near Point of Rocks and Brunswick.

This crest compares to a previous crest of 21.4 feet on January 27, 2010.
