He had a single gunshot wound to the head.

The body of a man who had been shot was found behind the Walmart store on Foxcroft Avenue in Martinsburg on Thursday morning, according to Martinsburg Police Detective Scott Doyle.

The man was found between stacks of recycled debris shortly before 9 a.m., Doyle said. He had a single gunshot wound to the head, Doyle said.

A .38-caliber Ruger handgun was found near the body, Doyle said in a press release issued early Thursday afternon. One round had been fired, he said.

It was determined that the man had been lying in that position for several hours before he was found, Doyle said in the release.

The man was described as a white male over 50 years of age, balding with white hair and having what appeared to be a physical impairment to his left hand, the release said. He was wearing a red polo shirt, black jeans, black shoes, a gray zipped hooded sweatshirt and a fanny pack, according to the release.

Doyle said that as of 12:35 p.m., police were not certain whether the man's wound was self-inflicted.

He said the body was being sent to the medical examiner's office in Charleston, W.Va., for an autopsy.

Doyle said police do not believe anyone else was in danger at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the possible identity of the dead man is asked to contact Martinsburg police at 304-264-2100.
