It is projected that more than 4,000 women across the United States will die from cervical cancer in 2013. Beth Mowrey from the Frederick County Health Department said regular screening for pre-cancerous cells that can help save lives.

"In the United States we are fortunate and have better access to health care. Locally, according to the Maryland Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance system, 69.4% of Frederick County Women did report having a pap-smear in the past year and the state of Maryland averages 68.6% so it is good than our percentages are higher than the states but we still would like see more women get screened in Frederick County," Mowrey said.

Mowrey said it is important for women to start getting regular pap-test at age 21 or within three years of becoming sexually active. The pap-test will look for abnormal cells and could prevent the cancer become it even starts.

Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women and it is projected that more than 12,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year. January is cervical heath awareness month.
