The study hopes to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or could help prevent cancer.
Adults across Frederick and Carroll counties can help fight back against cancer by enrolling in the American Cancer Society's new research study called called Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
This study follows in the footsteps of CPS-1 and CPS-2. CPS-1 established the link between smoking and lung cancer in the 1950's while CPS-2 helped linked obesity and cancer risk. The CPS-3 hopes to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or could help prevent cancer.
Lori Fry with the American Cancer Society said this study can help pave the way in hopes preventing people from the hearing words "you have cancer."
"I think it is important because it is going to teach us different ways to prevent cancer. i think it will also open the door to a lot of insight into what is causing cancer and you can't fix it until you figure that out," Fry said.
If you are between the ages of 30 and 65, have never been diagnosed with cancer, and are willing to make a long term commitment, you may qualify to participate. She said the initial enrollment appointment will not take long at all.
"So they'll come in, register and we're asking them for a waist measurement, a one time small blood sample, and I am saying one time and small on purpose because it makes people a little nervous, and then to complete a brief survey while they're there. So within 30 minutes of their appointment time, they'll be in and out," Fry said.
After the initial enrollment appointment, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions to take a survey online and complete your first and most comprehensive survey that will taken approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. Fry said it is a long range study and follow-up surveys will be given periodically, either through the mail or online, over then next 20 to 30 years.
Enrollment in Frederick County will take place from March 19, 2013 to March 23, 2013 at different locations. To schedule your appointment, go to www.CPS3FrederickCounty.org or call 1-888-604-5888.
