Spring Arrived Wed., But The Weather Doesn't Reflect It

Accu-Weather says we may have to deal with cold weather into early April.

Spring may be here, but it could be a while before we enjoy the warmer weather that usually comes with it. The latest indications are that we could be experiencing cold weather for quite a while, according to Accu-Weather.

"The reason is a persistent northwesterly flow of air in the upper levels of the atmosphere, and that's just been bringing a series of chilly, Canadian air masses down out across the Great Lakes and right into our area," says Jim Powers, a meteorologist with Accu-Weather.

The jet stream has also been taking a southern dip, bringing a lot of this cold weather to states like Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and parts of northern Florida, according to the Accu-Weather's website.

Powers says it looks like there won't be any relief from these cold temperatures anytime soon. "It warms for a day or two, and then another chilly air mass arrives. It looks like we're kind of stuck in this weather pattern I would suspect at least another week and maybe two weeks," he says. "Which is a spell of weather with a nice sunny weather, and temperatures in the 60's or 70's, which we can get this time of year. That does not appear to be in the near future," he says.

And we could be getting some more snow early next week. "There's another storm system coming by Monday, Monday night, which most likely brings rain, but there could be some sleet or wet snow mixed in," Powers says. "In terms of a big snow, or anything like that, we really don't see that coming."

During the winter of 2012-2013, it was mostly cold with very little snow. In contrast to 2011-2012, it was warm with very little snow.

But don't despair. Spring-like weather will eventually get here. "I would certainly hope by the time we get into middle April, we've had some days into the 60's and a little bit more like spring," says Powers.
