Supporters of the measure say it will make the state's roads safer.
The Maryland Senate has passed a measure that would allow illegal immigrants the ability to obtain a driver's license.
Buel Young, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles, said if these illegal immigrants have never been licensed to drive before, they would go thru the same requirements that new drivers go thru.
"Everyone who wishes to obtain a Maryland drivers license goes through the same process. You have to present documents that prove your age, identity, and that you are a Maryland resident," said Young.
Young said that all new drivers in Maryland have to complete a driver's education course, pass the laws test and skills test before they get their drivers license. He added that the illegal immigrants who have the second-tier driver's license have already completed those requirements.
Supporters of the measure say it will make the state's roads safer. Those against it feel the bill could turn Maryland into a haven for illegal immigrants.
