Cited to focus on family priorities.
The Frederick Board of County Commissioners today announced the departure of Thomas Owens as director of the Division of Fire and Rescue Services, effective June 1, 2013. Mr. Owens served as director since February 1, 2010.
Board President Blaine Young commented, "The Board of County Commissioners would prefer to not accept Chief Owens’ resignation out of our high regard and appreciation for his hard work on behalf of both the career and volunteer fire and rescue service personnel in our county. But, we must respect his personal decision to focus on family priorities at this time that require more of his care and attention.
"Tom brought over 40 years of fire and emergency service experience to the Division of Fire & Rescue Services, beginning as a volunteer firefighter at age 16 and rising through the ranks to become chief for two combination career/volunteer fire departments. He has dedicated his life to serving citizens of both urban and rural communities. Frederick County has benefitted greatly from the devotion and hard work from this very special firefighter and we thank him for his outstanding service to the citizens of Frederick County."
Prior to coming to Frederick County Government, chief Owens served as fire chief of the City of Fairfax Fire Department, Fairfax, Va., and previously served as assistant fire chief of the department.
The board also announced that Bureau Chief Doug Brown will serve as acting director of the division during this transition time.
